“Hotel Camarillo” is a 67 minute documentary focusing on paranormal investigations over the past 10 years at former Camarillo State Mental Hospital. Using a decade of archival footage, EVP, ITC, and photos along with new interviews with the investigators, “Hotel Camarillo” is the complete history of paranormal activity in the old abandoned buildings, some that no longer exist on the campus.

“Night Stalkers” is a paranormal documentary which follows Southern California paranormal investigators, and asks what drives them to hunt ghosts. Night Stalkers was shot in 2010 and 2011, and captures a unique time in Southern California where paranormal investigating was starting to grow. We learn the philosophies and techniques that ghost hunters use to communicte with the energies some call spirits.

The Day Jason Haunted Linda Vista Hospital!

In April 2011, I got a call from The Boyle Heights Paranormal Project to come down to Linda Vista Hospital, and bring an IR illuminator with me. The Hollywood Ghost Hunters were filming a teaser trailer that night at the hospital, in order to drum up interest for a possible TV show. I was told that they needed an IR illuminator for one of the cameras.

I stopped at home and picked up the illuminator (I wasn’t allowed to film any footage) and as I drove to the hospital, I wondered why the crew didn’t have an illuminator themselves? Or why the ghost hunting group BHPP wouldn’t have one? I concluded they may have just wanted me there for something else. When I got there the whole HGH team was there. Rick McCallum (Hollywood Stuntman), Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees in the Friday The 13th movies, from part 7 to part 10), R.A. Mihiloff, (Leatherface in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3), and Danielle Harris (Halloween 5).

I gave my illuminator over to one of the cameramen following the HGH crew around. I thought maybe I could do a little investigating too, but that was futile. Kane and R.A. were having fun trying to scare Danielle Harris by hiding and jumping out of rooms screaming at the top of their lungs. When that got old, Kane began scaring R.A. , who was a little jumpy being in Linda Vista Hospital in the first place.

A few hours later filming wrapped. The HGH crew was asked if they’d like to do any further investigating of the hospital, but Kane decided to call it a night. I took pictures with R.A. and Kane before he left (I don’t have the Kane photo). For the picture, Kane put me in a headlock and nearly lifted me off my feet! The headlock wasn’t for show; it was the real thing. I nearly blacked out! I’m 5’9″. Kane Hodder is 6′ 4″, and R.A. Mihiloff is 6’3″. I looked like a midget next to these guys!

We watched Kane drive away in his bad ass all black heavily modified Chrysler 300. The rest of the HGH entered Linda Vista Hospital again, heading up to the third floor. About 20 minutes later as the rest of us were talking in the parking lot, Kane drove in again! He then snuck up to the third floor to scare the shit out of his team mates!

(Special thanks to Carlos Gonzalez for helping me identify Kane Hodder’s car!)

Suicide Bridge Claims Another Victim Before Night Stalkers Screening

An unfortunate event happened just hours before Night Stalkers was shown at Defenders Park, at the east side of Pasadena’s haunted Colorado St. Bridge. Or as it’s most commonly known, “Suicide Bridge”. A man jumped from the bridge and into the Arroyo Seco to his death, after police tried to talk him down for 7 hours.

I was on the road to pick up a friend for the screening when word came in about the tragedy. I monitored the event page as we drove toward Pasadena wondering if we would have to call the screening off. That didn’t happen, and by the time the screening began at 8:00pm, there wasn’t even any police tape on the bridge restricting access.

We had a great turn out, and a fun Q&A afterward. One sobering question asked was how many of the paranormal teams featured in this documentary filmed in 2010 were left? Not many really.

Just after the screening, ANOTHER distraught man attempted to jump from the bridge, but was quickly taken into custody by police. There’s a reason Suicide Bridge has the reputation it does.

5th Annual “Haunted Films at Haunted Places”

“Voices From The Tapes, Recordings From The Other World” by Peter Bander

Last Bookstore sign.

I visited “The Last Bookstore” for the first time last week. It’s a great place with lots of character. It’s located in the Spring Arts Tower at 5th & Spring, and used to be a depression era bank. The vaults and heavy vault doors are still there, as well as the original tile floor.

I of course asked one of the workers there if it was haunted. He replied that no one wants to venture up to he second floor at night before closing. Awesome.

My friends Sabrina and Gladys quickly found the strange and occult section of the bookstore on the creepy second floor.

Gladys pointed out a book she thought I’d be interested in, and it was an excellent choice. The book is “Voices From The Tapes, Recordings From The Other World” by Peter Bander. (Yes I know it’s kind of ironic for me to supply an Amazon.com link to a book I found in a staunchly proud indie bookstore, but…actually I have no excuse!)

The book represents early research into the phenomenon of EVP(Electronic Voice Phenomenon). It’s written by the man who wrote the preface and edited Konstantīn Raudive’s Breakthrough. I found the introduction to “”Voices From The Tapes” very relevant to today’s paranormal investigators.

Quote from introduction.

But the coolest thing was the book was a gift to someone in 1977, and a small note was left at the beginning of the book.

The gift.

So my friend Lia wanted me to report on this book as I read it. I’m reading the book in pieces, as I rarely find time to read a book anymore! The entire book is only 160 pages, and could easily be finished in an evening. But I sometimes like to ‘live” with a book for a while, and think about what I’ve read. I may not get back to a book for a week or more.

The book first takes us through scientific reaction to the EVP phenomena, and how serious it was taken and researched in the 1970’s. Batteries of tests are presented, trying to figure out just where the voices were coming from. By process of elimination, Bander states the voices were dismissed from coming from outer space, or a projection of our subconscious, also known as “thought forms.” The only “possibility” left were voices of the dead. The voices d indeed show up on oscilloscopes, even after every possibility was eliminated, including radio waves.

Surprisingly, Bander’s book is openly critical of Konstantīn Raudive. The author chronicles the problems he had with the very demanding Raudive in getting “Breakthrough” ready for publication. Bander also states that some of Raudive’s conclusions were questionable, and he insisted that questionable material be present in his book. Bander states that “Breakthrough” is a difficult read, and it is. I’ve owned the bouk for about 3 years and still haven’t finished it. The book is basically meticulous notes of all the EVP Raudive captured, with side notes and minutiae that are just boring to read through.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for another update!

Ghost Boxes, Self Congratulatory Confirmation Bias, and the Smirking Skeptic

A lot of investigators who don’t feel that audio I.T.C. (Instrumental Trans Communication) works for them, but DO put faith in EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) are passing around this article by Mitch Silverstein, Stephanie Bohn, and Kenny Biddle called, Testing the Validity of the Ghost Box as a Tool for Paranormal Investigation

Again, has anyone actually read this self serving report, past the title of the article? It’s a very sneaky, subversive and self congratulatory piece, in my opinion.

It emphasizes the “silliness” of communicating with the dead in the first place, and uses that baseless conclusion as self imposed fact that such a thing is impossible with no proof either way.

Now granted, I personally get tired of ghost hunters insisting that the very real phenomenon of ITC and EVP voices are actually spirits of the dead with no proof as well. But I don’t dismiss the phenomenon itself, which is what this study was concocted to do. Sharp readers will also see that the authors threw in EVP as equally silly and irrelevant.

The study never once declared that these tests were conducted in settings that have a reputation of being haunted. The study never touched on whole sentences captured in the same voice over several channels being caught by investigators. The study never touched on foul language coming from “ghost boxes”, which would be an impossibility if it were merely radio stations broadcasting these voices, as the FCC doesn’t allow foul language over the airwaves.

The voice says, “What the fuck!”

I’ve witnessed several times direct answers to questions posed by investigators come from “shack hacks.” To completely dismiss this and my points above simply because you are a hard line skeptic (which I once was) is simply dishonest reporting. And sneaking in the jab at EVP in this report too just confirms that this study never set out to be unbiased.
